 About Us
Welcome to Whimsical Arts web site!
All of the handmade art that you
will see on these pages is hand-selected by me, Patricia Healey. For the most
part I "Buy Direct" from the artists so that the artist will get the benefit of the
most peso for their hard work. On each buying trip I make it a point to
scour the markets in search of unique, fun and whimsical art to buy. Then I
make every effort to find the artist so that I can learn more about them and
"Buy Direct" from them in the future. With the Oaxacan Wood Carvings there
is a strong competition among many of the carvers, and it's not
always easy to get directions to the "taller", (workshop), of one carver to
the next. With a lot of tenacity, and the very likely chance of stumbling
upon a relative of that carver, I've always managed to find the
artist.
Located in Eugene, Oregon, Whimsical Arts, formally known as "Mexican
Imports" is now going into it's second year of business. I have
spent five months of the past twelve months in Mexico traveling the
country in search of high quality silver jewelry and hand made arts and
crafts. In those five months I have developed a profound respect for the
artists that I have been working with. I find them to be extremely hard
working, amazingly creative, and highly spiritual people, not to mention
their sense of humor, which you will see a lot of with the Oaxacan Wood
Carvings!
For you, my customer, I will provide a quality product at a fair price. If
there is a specific animal or figure that you are interested in, please
contact me through email and I'll add it to my shopping list for
future buys. If you have a special stone, that you would like to have set into
the handmade jewelry, and it fits all of the requirements for the setting, I
can provide that service for you too.
Life can get so fast paced at times. Microwave ovens can't heat up
frozen dinners fast enough, 56k modems seem to be at a snails pace, and
forget trying to keep up with the girl at the check out counter of your
local market, yikes, that's really starting to feel like a cattle
run! There's something about surrounding yourself with hand
made, whimsical, folk art that has a calming effect. I hear it over and over
again from regular customers that I have met through the many festivals
and trade shows that I do, "This art is so compelling, I look at it every day...I need some more!"
Please keep returning to this sight as I will be adding new art from the
Caribbean and the Pacific Northwest in the near future. There is an
adventurous side to me that stays poised and ready to discover obscure art
from the world over. I feel certain that there will be some very exciting folk
art on the pages of "WhimsicalArts.com" in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Patricia Healey
